This Archetype is number 20 of 22 Trump or Major Arcana cards in the Tarot. While the remaining pip and court cards portray more mundane realities, these cards represent higher energies, karmic forces, powers beyond our control, and superhuman strengths. In the Thoth Tarot deck, Judgment is ruled by Fire
~ Release ~
I love this rendition of Judgment by Karen Kuyendall, called "Rejuvination" in the Tarot of the Cat People. This card is about a definite decision having been made - not the process of deliberating (Justice), or the feeling of doom (The Tower) that one may feel when the ax comes down, but the actual end result - accompanied by acceptance and rebirth, a release from the bondage of uncertainty.
For me, there's nothing like divorce to bring home the feeling of finality this card represents. The parties involved experience more emotional ups and downs throughout the process than I can possibly describe. It's quite a roller-coaster ride, but there's some wonderful feeling when the denial finally goes away and a solid decision is reached.
Judgment means "you reap just what you sow." Perhaps you have unwittingly sown seeds of regret or remorse. Maybe you have paved the way to your own unhappiness, ill-health or misfortune. Sometimes blind faith leads us into situations or relationships that must eventually collapse. Your only consolation may be that it's all over. Like actual death - it's the end of the story - but with full consciousness of the consequences, and a lesson, or possibly many - learned.
Whenever Judgment comes along, whether we're talking about getting a ticket, being acquitted of some crime, or being hanged, the good part is - the suspense is gone, your fate is sealed, and that beats the heck out of not knowing what's coming up next! Our very lives lead us to demise, and one way or another - we are judged for our deeds and must leave the past behind us.
On the bright side, you could be judged in a very favorable light and come out on the right end of the stick. But no matter which end you're on, it's time to collect your reward, rest on your laurels, and contemplate the lessons of your journey.
MEDITATION: Contemplate Judgment, and the times in your life when judgment was passed, and a gateway opened into a new era.
PERSONAL DISCUSSIONS: When have you felt the energy of Judgment? Have you seen it in other people? Have you had happy/sad experiences with this energy?
TAROT EXPERIENCE: Recalling a time when you may have you drawn this card, what were the circumstances surrounding it, and what did it mean to you? How do you feel this archetype affects the cards that come before or after?
